Max Planck Summer Internship Program

Our Summer Internship Program (MaxSIP) provides the opportunity for highly motivated undergraduate students to join one of the labs at the Max Planck Institute of Neurobiology and the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry. The program will allow you to become familiar with different scientific approaches and laboratory methods. The aim of our internship program is to provide excellent students with a broad range of research experiences and knowledge to promote them early on in their career.

Reserach areas and labs

You can indicate up to five of our research groups you prefer to work with. Your research will be in fields ranging from structural, computational, developmental and cellular biology to molecular biology, biophysics and neurobiology.

For more information on our research groups, please visit

The following groups have already indicated that they will accept interns in 2020: Conti, Cox, Griesbeck, Baier, Mayer, Murray and Schwille. Applicants are encouraged to include these groups in their application to increase their chances, but should also indicate what other groups may be of interest to them.

Who can apply?

Highly motivated bachelor’s and master’s students in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Engineering, Math, Psychology and related fields can apply.
The program intends to promote students early on in their career. Although there are no restrictions regarding the qualifications of a potential candidate, applications of highly qualified early-career candidates will be treated preferentially.

We strongly encourage applications from excellent students from all countries. We are happy to assist successful applicants with questions concerning visa requirements.
