PhD position (m/f/d)

Job Code: orni__w002
Job offer from August 25, 2020

The Max Planck Institute for Ornithology (MPIO) in Seewiesen (located near Starnberg about 50 km from Munich) is an internationally renowned research institution with more than 200 employees working in four departments and nine research groups.

One PhD position (m/f/d) is available to work in the department of Behavioural Neurobiology at the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology (MPIO) in Seewiesen, Germany.

The position

Songbirds are a model to study vocal communication. In this project, we monitor auditory and vocal activity of the forebrain of freely behaving birds using state-of-the art telemetric devices in combination with electrode arrays. Candidates should have a background in in vivo electrophysiological recordings of animals, or a background in spike sorting/signal analysis, or a strong basis in related methodological approaches. Experience with MatLab or Python and/or an interest in computational neuroscience would be an advantage. Since the project is in collaboration with UC Berkeley, we are searching for applicants with good communication skills and mobility next to a high commitment and curiosity about neuroscientific questions.

The position is available for a period of three years. For further information, please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Manfred Gahr: telephone: +49 (0)8157 / 932-276, e-mail: gahr@orn.mpg.de.

Our offer

The salary will be paid in accordance with the German Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes (TVöD Bund), salary group 13 (65%). Qualified PhD candidates can apply to join the International Max-Planck Research School for Organismal Biology or the Graduate School for Systemic Neuroscience that offer unique training opportunities.

The Max Planck Society has set itself the goal of employing more severely disabled people. Applications of severely disabled persons are expressly desired. The Max Planck Society also wants to increase the proportion of women in those areas in which they are underrepresented. Therefore, women are specifically invited to apply.
